About this release
Meiko Kaji’s Otoko Onna Kokoro No Aika brings her distinctive voice to a set of cinematic songs framed by lush orchestral arrangements. Originally released in 1974, the album belongs to the same early period as her celebrated screen roles in Lady Snowblood and Stray Cat Rock. Its dramatic pop settings include her interpretation of Tokyo Nagare Mono, the theme associated with Seijun Suzuki’s 1966 film Tokyo Drifter. Wewantsounds’ reissue continues its exploration of Kaji’s Teichiku recordings, pairing the original artwork with an obi and new liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha, based on an interview with the singer. The arrangements balance atmosphere, melody and a subtle rhythmic pull.
