About this release
Recorded in New York in 1972, Mulatu Of Ethiopia captures Mulatu Astatke bringing Ethiopian musical ideas into conversation with jazz, Latin rhythms and funk. His work with producer Gil Snapper and the city's jazz and Latin session players gave that combination a distinct, unhurried character, with repeating melodic figures and supple ensemble playing at its heart. The self-titled opener leads into “Mascaram Setaba” and “Dewel”, while the second side ends with the extended rhythmic movement of “Chifara”. This Strut vinyl edition presents the seven-track original album, a clear introduction to Astatke's developing Ethio-jazz sound.
