About this release
Tilaye's Saxophone With The Dahlak Band captures saxophonist Tilaye Gebre fronting the group in late-1970s Addis Ababa. Recorded at the Ghion Hotel, the album brings tenor and alto saxophone together with organ, electric guitar, trumpet, bass, drums and cowbell. Gebre and organist Dawit Yifru arranged the songs, drawing on Ethiopian melodies and a band sound that moves through funk, jazz and reggae influences. A founding member of the Equators, later renamed the Dahlak Band, Gebre helped shape the city's hotel music scene. Muzikawi presents these nine recordings on a black double LP in a gatefold sleeve.
