About this release
Al Fajer Group formed in Kuwait in 1987, with Sima Kanaan on vocals, Bashar Shammout on guitar, Jameel Saraj on oud and guitar, and Nizar Alyan on percussion. Their acoustic arrangements grew from performances of Palestinian patriotic songs, with the group recording its first album to reel tape during the First Intifada in 1988. They later began writing original material, but the 1990 invasion of Kuwait dispersed the members before a second album could be completed. Majazz Project’s release brings this repertoire to vinyl, preserving the interplay of voice, plucked strings and percussion at the centre of the group’s sound.
