About this release
Pops Mohamed’s Black Disco debut brings Yamaha organ and programmed rhythms into a small-group jazz setting. Recorded in 1975, the album features Basil Coetzee on flute and tenor saxophone and Sipho Gumede on bass, surrounding Mohamed’s organ lines with warm melodic interplay. Original pieces sit alongside interpretations of ‘My Girl’ and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’, with the two-part ‘Dark Clouds’ stretching across the sides. The largely downtempo arrangements balance electronic rhythm with the players’ improvisations. Afrodelic’s reissue draws on the original analogue master tapes and is licensed from As-Shams Archive, preserving this early chapter in the group’s recorded work.
