About this release
Burnin' documents Portland's Carl Smith And The Natural Gas Company at the point where a long-running band had developed from big-band roots into a compact jazz-funk outfit. Originally issued in 1980 by Oregon's Match Box Recordings, their only album was brought to BBE Music by The Mighty Zaf.
The programme combines funk, jazz and soul, with arrangements largely by Larry Dunlap and a lead vocal from Smith's daughter Carlee on Love Won't Let Me Go. BBE's double-vinyl reissue includes the original artwork and an oral history drawn from band members. The label confirms that the records play at 45rpm despite the printed labels stating 33rpm.
