About this release
Citi Express documents an early South African response to the house music arriving from the US and UK. Producer Quentin Foster developed the project for Ron ‘Robot’ Friedman’s On Records imprint, reworking international songs in his Tone Def studio with local musicians. A version of Stevie Wonder’s Living For The City anchors the six-track programme, alongside It’s Too Late, Love Is The Message and the original composition Open Invitation. The arrangements combine soulful house influences with touches that anticipated the rise of kwaito. Afrosynth’s reissue returns the album to vinyl, preserving a moment of transition in South African dance music.
