About this release
D’Angelo’s 1995 debut Brown Sugar brings traditional soul phrasing into contact with contemporary R&B, funk and hip-hop production. Working largely as singer, producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he combines vintage recording approaches with modern electronic equipment to create the album’s layered sound. The ten-song programme includes the title track, ‘Lady’, ‘Jonz in My Bonz’ and ‘Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine’, alongside his version of Cruisin’. Its mix of vocal harmonies, rhythm and songwriting helped define the emerging neo-soul movement. This Virgin double-LP edition presents the complete original album across two records.
