About this release
Michael Gray reworks Derrick McKenzie and Angela Johnson’s On My Way Out for this Groove Culture Seven release. McKenzie’s piano and synth parts meet a firmer house groove, with Johnson’s vocal remaining the centre of the A-side. The mix draws on disco and eighties boogie, keeping the production colourful and rhythmically loose. On the reverse, the dub strips back the song to place more emphasis on synth bass, delay and the instrumental arrangement. The two seven-inch versions give the collaboration both a full vocal treatment and a more spacious companion, balancing the song’s melodic character with its dancefloor foundation.
