About this release
Devon Russell brings Curtis Mayfield’s songs into a soulful reggae setting on this pairing from 333, the Death Is Not The End imprint. Move On Up and Darker Than Blue come from the body of recordings that became Russell’s tribute album, a project developed over several years from his shared enthusiasm for Mayfield and The Impressions with producer Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith. These performances retain the melodic warmth of the songs while placing Russell’s voice within Jamaican rhythms. Presented together as a double A-side single, they offer two connected expressions of a musical relationship that runs through his work.
