About this release
The Big Payback pairs two recordings from EPMD's 1989 album Unfinished Business. Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith trade verses over sample-based beats they produced themselves, with the title track drawing its central groove from James Brown's The Payback and adding further Brown samples. On the reverse, So Wat Cha Sayin' combines elements of B.T. Express and Funkadelic with drums from Soul II Soul's Fairplay. Both sides present the LP versions, retaining the duo's unhurried delivery and stripped-back funk. Mr Bongo brings the two tracks together on this translucent orange 7-inch reissue.
