About this release
Esa Williams co-creates Dala What We Must with multi-instrumentalist Robin G. Breeze, drawing on his Cape Town roots and collaborations developed across London, Oaxaca and Nairobi. Field recordings sit alongside layered instrumentation, with an approach informed by his work in documentary scoring. Nonku Phiri, Chisara Agor, Tasneem Williams, Los Pream and Kujenga contribute to a record concerned with memory, movement and community. Nakupenda brings earlier vocal sessions with Phiri into an amapiano setting, while Vanguard Drive connects township funk with live instrumentation. The title reflects a South African call to do what is necessary, bringing the album’s personal and collaborative themes together.
