Esya - Chasing Desire

Chasing Desire is the debut album from Esya – the pseudonym of singer, multi-instrumentalist and twice- Mercury Prize nominated artist Ayse Hassan (Savages, Kite Base, 180dB). It follows a sold-out, self-released triptych of EPs. This album expands her previous sonic explorations into the antithetical nature of longing: from the yearning to be with someone again, to the obsession of embracing a path unknown. Esya wrestles with these fundamentally human impulses through a vastly broadened sound palette with the addition of cello, violin, piano, and electric guitar into her pre-existing synth and bass-heavy sound; thanks to collaborations from a plethora of her musical contemporaries such as Jessy Lanza, Sharon Van Etten, Laura-Mary Carter, Giungla, Rodrigo D’Erasmo and Lee Tesche.

The album opens with Fallen – a triumphant war-cry against fearing the unknown; then dives head-first into the contradictions of her industrial pop sound, from the playful titular arpeggiating R&B-banger Chasing Desire; to the brooding, discordant Lullaby. It is all tied together with sub-forward and often wild drum programming to ensure that you will be compelled to dance, even in your darkest hour. All songs written by Ayse Hassan.
