About this release
Promises brings Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra together in a continuous composition divided into nine movements. Sam Shepherd’s repeating keyboard motif provides a point of return as Sanders’ tenor saxophone moves through the surrounding space and the orchestra adds slowly changing layers. The piece draws electronic composition, spiritual jazz and orchestral writing into a patient sequence, allowing shifts in texture and intensity to carry the movement. Rather than a collection of separate songs, it develops as a single work across both sides of the record, with the recurring phrase connecting its quieter passages and fuller ensemble sections.
