About this release
Piñata brings Freddie Gibbs' direct, closely observed writing into contact with Madlib's sample-built production. Released in 2014, their seventeen-track collaboration draws its musical backdrop from funk, soul and more unexpected corners of the producer's record collection, leaving room for Gibbs' detailed storytelling and shifts in delivery.
Danny Brown, Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt and Domo Genesis are among the guests, but the partnership at the centre gives the album its character. Deeper, Thuggin' and Shame sit within a full-length sequence that balances Gibbs' stark accounts with Madlib's loose rhythmic feel. This Madlib Invazion edition presents the album across two vinyl records.
