Garefowl - Things That Vanish
PRICE £25.43 (£30.52 Incl VAT)
LABEL AD 93Garefowl’s Things That Vanish brings the folk music and seabird stories of St Kilda into a record made on Hirta after dark. Conceived by Ewan Macdonald and his father Murdo, the project connects family history with the islands’ threatened wildlife. Fiddle, cello, concertina, banjo and harmonium sit among recordings of wind, waves and birds.
No synthesizers were used. Instead, the group worked with processed field and hydrophone recordings, alongside drones derived from the composition of rock and bone samples. Those sounds give the traditional instruments an unfamiliar setting without losing their physical character. Released by AD 93, it’s a meeting of Scottish folk, environmental sound and experimental recording rooted in a very particular place.
