About this release
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley’s Simigwa combines Ghanaian highlife with the funk and soul influences that shaped his solo work in the 1970s. Originally released in 1975 on Essiebons, the album places horn arrangements, vocal interjections and percussion breaks around six compact songs. “Kwaakwaa”, “Akoko Ba” and “This Hustling World” make up the first side, with “Toffie”, “Adwoa” and “Fa No Dem Ara” on the reverse. The sound reflects Ambolley’s experience in Ghanaian bands as well as his interest in American funk. This official Strut reissue includes an interview with Ambolley about the making of the album.
