About this release
Chameleon / Watermelon Man gives two recordings from Herbie Hancock's 1973 Head Hunters album a side each on twelve-inch vinyl. Chameleon opens with Hancock's Minimoog bass line before stretching into an extended jazz-funk performance, with Harvey Mason on drums, Paul Jackson on bass and Bennie Maupin on reeds. Watermelon Man reworks Hancock's earlier composition for the band's electric sound, introduced by Bill Summers' bottle-blown rhythmic figure. Issued through the Major Keys series, this licensed release is remastered and cut by an engineer from the original album sessions. It pairs the full album recordings rather than the earlier Blue Note version of Watermelon Man.
