About this release
Hoshina Anniversary gives two extended pieces a side each on Hyakunin Isshu, a Patience release named after the Japanese poetry anthology Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. Yoshinobu Hoshina’s combination of house rhythms, acid bass and jazz-inflected keyboards has room to develop gradually here. ‘Karakurenaini’ follows a steady four-to-the-floor pulse, with looping percussion and angular piano chords moving through the arrangement. ‘Kirigirisu’ slows the pace, working a lurching rhythm and recurring melody through a long build and break. Both titles refer to poems from the anthology, connecting the record’s patient electronic forms to a much older source of inspiration.
