About this release
Ishmael Ensemble’s third album, ‘Rituals’, expands the Bristol group’s meeting of live instruments and electronic production. Pete Cunningham and Holly Wellington share vocal, keyboard and synthesizer roles alongside Stephen Mullins on guitar, Jake Spurgeon on bass and Rory O’Gorman on drums. Produced by Cunningham and Ali Staton, the twelve-track album moves between jazz, dub and electronic textures with a stronger focus on songs. String arrangements by Bethany Ley add another layer to the ensemble’s sound. ‘C’mon’ opens the record, with ‘Madrid’, ‘Leviathan’ and ‘Butterflies’ among the later pieces. The black vinyl LP comes in a gatefold sleeve designed by Alfie Allen.
