About this release
Jocelyn Virapin connects Guadeloupean gwoka with jazz-influenced keyboards across two recordings selected for this Hot Casa seven-inch. Pasyon revisits a 1994 performance in an edit made with the artist, adding a Rhodes improvisation by Florian Pellissier to the original recording. Respè Pou Fanm, first released with Virapin’s band Beloka in 2010, brings together ka drums, hypnotic bass, Rhodes and Creole call-and-response singing. Its title expresses the song’s message of respect for women. The pairing places Virapin’s percussion and vocal traditions in dialogue with flowing keyboard lines, linking two periods of his work through their rhythmic and melodic interplay.
