About this release
John Armstrong’s Yebo! brings together fourteen South African dance and party recordings from apartheid’s final years. The compilation follows the local bubblegum sound through disco, boogie and synth-pop, tracing how African-American musical influences met South African rhythms and multilingual vocals. Paul Ndlovu opens the selection with Tsakane and returns with Khombora Mina; The Angels, Black Moses and Babsy Mlangeni add further voices to the programme. Tools & Figs’ Blackout sits alongside Joy White’s Ximamane and Dieketseng’s Dayshift, before the final side closes with Chicco’s Chomesa. Spread across three records, the set places these different performers within a shared dancefloor tradition.
