About this release
John Carroll Kirby’s Tuscany draws two contrasting solo piano pieces from a writing trip to Pietrasanta in 2018. Released on Patience, the album follows a shared seven-note bassline through music shaped by the landscape and history of this corner of Italy.
“Cascata di Malbacco” takes its name from a waterfall Kirby visited by bicycle, translating its movement into flowing, reflective piano. “Sant’Anna” turns towards the area’s wartime memorials, offering a quieter meditation on loss and remembrance. The two side-long performances leave room for repetition, improvisation and the natural resonance of the instrument. This is the 2023 repress, with green printing inside the sleeve.
