About this release
A meeting of jazz improvisation and dance-floor rhythm, Los Conquistadores Chocolates comes from Johnny Hammond’s 1975 album Gears, produced with Larry and Fonce Mizell. Its layered arrangement brings analog keyboards and electronics together with flute, vibraphone, strings and wah-wah guitar, building a groove that also found a home in David Mancuso’s Loft. Victor Rosado’s Classic NYC 12-inch Mix extends the piece’s club appeal, while the original version on the reverse keeps the Mizells’ richly detailed production in view. Hammond’s keyboard playing connects the track’s jazz roots with the rhythmic pull of funk and disco.
