About this release
Khruangbin’s debut album The Universe Smiles Upon You brings together the Texan trio’s understated rhythms, melodic bass and spacious guitar lines. Recorded in a remote barn in the Texas countryside, it draws on the Thai funk and Southeast Asian records the band listened to on journeys to rehearsal. Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald ‘DJ’ Johnson leave room around each part, giving tracks such as Dern Kala and August Twelve a relaxed, exploratory feel. White Gloves and People Everywhere (Still Alive) introduce vocals to the largely instrumental approach. This is the black vinyl edition on Night Time Stories.
