About this release
Esengo is London Afrobeat Collective’s fourth album, produced by Sonny Johns and featuring Congolese singer Juanita Euka. The group combines afrobeat and highlife with funk, jazz and Latin influences, using interlocking rhythms and horns to support Euka’s vocals. Topesa Esengo Na Motema opens with a lighter, celebratory feel before My Way and Take Me To The Sea. The second side moves through Freedom, El Ritmo De Londres and De Kinshasa À Sona Bata, giving each arrangement room while retaining the ensemble’s groove-led focus. Canopy’s vinyl LP contains the full six-track programme, bringing the band’s international influences into a cohesive recorded set.
