About this release
Recorded in 1977, 1514 Oliver Avenue (Basement) captures Minneapolis eleven-piece Mind & Matter before Jimmy Jam's later production career. He was sixteen when he began writing and arranging for the group, whose sound paired a vocal quartet with a strong rhythm section and layers of Rhodes, Roland and Hammond keyboards. These basement demos draw on Philadelphia soul, with Clavinet accents, disco rhythms and prominent vocal hooks. Numero Group's release takes its title from the address where the music began. The eight-track vinyl programme runs from No One Else Can Do It To Me Baby to Virgin Lady.
