About this release
Monsieur Van Pratt’s ninth Illegal Disco release reshapes disco and funk material around fuller grooves and a clear club pulse. Watcha Gonna Do opens with clipped funk figures and a buoyant disco feel, giving the A-side a direct rhythmic character. The Contest moves towards a more celebratory mood on the flip, followed by the fuller vocal presence and string accents of Dance With Me. The contrasts come through changes in texture and arrangement rather than a departure from the record’s central groove. Van Pratt keeps the warmth of the source material in view while giving each rework the weight and structure of a contemporary disco edit.
