About this release
Mulatu Astatke’s Ethio Jazz connects Ethiopian melodies with jazz, soul and Latin rhythmic ideas in a collection of instrumental recordings from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The arrangements give repeating rhythmic figures room to develop beneath horns, keyboards and guitar, reflecting the composer’s role in shaping modern Ethiopian instrumental music. Dewel and Yekermo Sew open the nine-track programme, which also includes Netsanet, Tezetaye Antchi Lidj and Sabye. Heavenly Sweetness presents the album on 180g vinyl, returning these recordings to an LP setting alongside their wider recognition through the Éthiopiques reissue series.
