About this release
Noel McGhie & Space Spies brings together spiritual jazz, funk and fusion in five extended pieces. Originally released in France in 1975 by Disques Espérance, the album features the Jamaican-born drummer with trumpeter Itaru Oki, pianist Georges-Edouard Nouel, bassist Louis Xavier and saxophonist Jorge João. McGhie had become part of Paris's free-jazz scene, working with musicians including Steve Lacy and Archie Shepp. Trapeze opens with a breakbeat-driven feel, while Dancer and Mademoiselle Tuloch explore a more spacious groove. This Comet Records LP reissue presents the complete programme, including For Gone Desillusion and the lengthy Ubet.
