About this release
Straight Outta Compton captures N.W.A’s confrontational blend of street reportage, sharp humour and forceful funk-based production. The group’s debut album centres the voices of Ice Cube, MC Ren and Eazy-E, with Dr. Dre and DJ Yella shaping the beats. Its opening run moves from the title track into F*** Tha Police and Gangsta Gangsta, setting blunt accounts of life in Compton against hard drums and clipped samples. Express Yourself offers a different melodic angle on the second side. The record helped bring gangsta rap and West Coast hip-hop to a much wider audience.
