Pharoah Sanders - Wisdom Through Music

Pharoah Sanders' Wisdom Through Music brings spiritual jazz, communal rhythms and open-ended improvisation together across five pieces. Recorded in 1972 and first released by Impulse! in 1973, it features a group including pianist Joe Bonner, flautist James Branch, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Norman Connors, with percussion adding movement and colour around Sanders' reeds.

High Life opens with an uplifting rhythmic feel, while Love Is Everywhere puts melody and collective energy at the centre. The title track, The Golden Lamp and the extended Selflessness complete a set that moves between lyrical passages and freer ensemble playing. Produced by Lee Young, the album captures Sanders' early-seventies sound in a compact, varied programme.
