About this release
Dummy brings Beth Gibbons’ voice into Portishead’s mix of sampled textures, slow beats and shadowy arrangements. The Bristol band’s debut arrived on Go! Beat in 1994, with Numb, Sour Times and Glory Box introducing different sides of its sound. Mysterons opens the album before Strangers and It Could Be Sweet shift between harsher rhythms and quieter spaces. Roads places Gibbons’ vocal at the centre of a particularly spare arrangement, while Pedestal and Biscuit lead into the closing Glory Box. The album won the 1995 Mercury Music Prize and remains a defining release in the development of trip-hop.
