Riva Starr and Melbourne duo Close Counters bring jazz, soul and a generous helping of disco to Heist Recordings. Push Your Luck EP pairs their live musical touch with the warm vocals of Andre Espeut, making a four-track 12-inch that moves comfortably between deep house and more buoyant club material.

The title track works a supple bassline and rich chords around Espeut’s voice, while Gearbox lets the instruments lead, with piano, congas and playful electronic touches. Dizzy turns towards disco house, before the closing Scat Dub returns to Push Your Luck with more space for the groove. A strong meeting of Riva Starr’s club instincts and Close Counters’ jazz-funk sensibility.
