About this release
Saha Gnawa’s self-titled debut connects Moroccan Gnawa traditions with New York jazz and collective improvisation. Led by guembri player and vocalist Maâlem Hassan Ben Jaafar alongside drummer Daniel Freedman, the group developed its interplay through late-night sessions at Brooklyn’s LunÀtico. Traditional rhythms and melodies form the centre of arrangements extended by guitar, keyboards and subtle electronics. Guests include Nels Cline, Gilad Hekselman and Donny McCaslin, with Abraham Rodriguez Jr. and Gilmar Gomes joining Tbal. Produced by Freedman, the eight-track album explores the relationship between the trance-like repetition of Gnawa and open-ended ensemble playing.
