Salt Queen - ARE U OK

Salt Queen pair deadpan club commentary with acid house on ARE U OK, their debut for Samples From Mars. The New York duo of visual artist and musician Magali van Caloen and label founder Teddy Stuart build the title track around Italo-inflected 808 drums and a persistent 303 bassline. Van Caloen’s spoken vocal turns familiar dancefloor exchanges into something funny, uneasy and increasingly unhinged.

The ‘Freak Nasty Club Mix’ takes a different route through the hardware, starting with a weighty SH-101 bassline before switching into a driving acid sequence. Instrumental versions of both mixes complete the four-track 12-inch, offering the same stripped-back rhythms without the spoken narrative. Raw analogue production and a dry sense of humour run through the whole record.
