About this release
Shabaka Hutchings joins a group of South African musicians on Wisdom Of Elders, recorded in Johannesburg and released by Brownswood Recordings. Tenor saxophone, alto saxophone and trumpet meet piano, bass, drums, percussion and vocals in an ensemble shaped by South African jazz traditions and Caribbean influences. Nduduzo Makhathini contributes piano and Rhodes, Mandla Mlangeni plays trumpet and Siyabonga Mthembu provides vocals. The nine-piece programme opens with Mzwandile and moves through Joyous, The Sea and Give Thanks before closing with Nguni. Presented across two vinyl records, the album explores how musical ideas travel between players, places and generations.
