About this release
Recorded at Nagoya’s Lovely jazz club in December 1990, Live At Lovely captures Takeo Moriyama’s quartet across five extended performances. Pianist Fumio Itabashi contributes four of the compositions and revisits Watarase, previously recorded with Moriyama on Smile. Tenor saxophone and bass complete a group whose interplay moves between modal jazz, post-bop and freer passages. Sunrise opens the set with driving ensemble playing, while Exchange stretches across a full record side, pushing the quartet into a more intense improvisational space. Hush-A-Bye and Good Bye bring the session to its close. BBE Music’s double-vinyl edition includes an obi strip and notes by J Jazz co-curator Tony Higgins.
