About this release
Tata Sibeko's It's A Mess pairs two South African boogie recordings on this Sharp-Flat 12-inch reissue. The former Kabasa frontman, producer and bassist made the title track in 1985, combining dramatic synths and a bass-led groove with an appeal for peace during the Cold War. On the other side, Afro Breakdance follows the dancefloor direction he had begun exploring with Kabasa's Afro Funkin' in 1980, using machine rhythms, keyboards and choral vocals. Together, the tracks document Tata's shift from band-led Afro-funk towards the electronic sounds shaping South African pop in the mid-1980s.
