About this release
Africanism places the voices of Last Poets Abiodun Oyewole and Umar Bin Hassan alongside Tony Allen’s Afrobeat drumming. The eight-track album revisits poems including “When The Revolution Comes” and “Gash Man” with arrangements built from live performances in Brooklyn and London. Egypt 80 musicians Akinola Adio Oyebola and Kunle Justice contribute guitar and bass, while Kaidi Tatham, Joe Armon-Jones and Courtney Pine add keyboard and saxophone parts. Recorded at The Wavelab and Prince Fatty’s studio, the project connects spoken-word performance with Afrobeat and jazz, allowing the instruments to respond to the delivery and rhythm of the poetry.
