About this release
The Smiths’ self-titled debut pairs Morrissey’s distinctive voice and lyrics with Johnny Marr’s melodic guitar work, backed by Andy Rourke on bass and Mike Joyce on drums. After the original sessions with Troy Tate, John Porter re-recorded the album in London, Manchester and Stockport during breaks in the band’s 1983 UK tour. Released in 1984, it moves from Reel Around the Fountain through the sharper turns of Miserable Lie and What Difference Does It Make? Hand in Glove and Still Ill capture the ringing guitar sound at the centre of the record, while Suffer Little Children closes its original album sequence.
