About this release
The Toreadors' Thembi and Gwinyitshe document a one-off South African session recorded on 3 October 1972. Produced by Ray Nkwe, the two tracks first appeared as a Motella single through Gallo Africa's Mavuthela division. Nkwe wrote Thembi, whose floating jazz arrangement and vocal performance bring a psychedelic soul feel to the A-side. On the reverse, Gwinyitshe follows a firmer soul-jazz-funk groove with relaxed vocals. It was written by Teaspoon Ndelu, who also plays on the recording. This Mr Bongo 7-inch reissue reunites the original pairing, showing two contrasting sides of the session group's sound.
