About this release
Progress gives Tony Allen and Afrika 70 two extended sides to develop the interplay at the heart of their Afrobeat sound. Allen’s drumming holds the ensemble in motion with an intricate balance of propulsion and restraint, allowing the band to build around his shifting patterns. The title track occupies the first side, followed by “Afro Disco Beat” on the reverse. Part of Allen’s early solo catalogue recorded with the musicians also working as Fela Kuti’s band, the album places his own musical direction in focus. Comet Records’ restored and remastered vinyl reissue is housed in a heavyweight tip-on jacket.
