Tony Higgins and Mike Peden conclude BBE’s J Jazz compilation series with a fifth volume spanning recordings from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. The selection connects jazz-funk and fusion with modal playing, samba and more experimental sessions, drawing on private presses and independent releases. Toshiyuki Honda & Burning Waves, Masaru Imada, Yasuhiro Kohno and Mikio Masuda feature among the musicians, with Kohno’s solo reading of My Favorite Things offering a different perspective within the set. Mastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery, the triple album includes extensive sleeve notes and photographs from the Tokyo Jazz Joints project.
