About this release
Downtempo 1 places live improvisation at the centre of Tony Soprano Band’s electronic sound. Daniel Rock, Lucky Pereira, Robert Downie and Winton Findlay performed bass, drums, sampler, drum machine and synths together at Dune Castle’s Throne Room studio, working without fixed arrangements. Patrick Ryan then selected, edited and mixed the extended performances into their final forms, making the studio part of the composition. Breaks, loops and fragments of melody emerge and dissolve while retaining the looseness of the original sessions. The record favours sustained atmosphere over dramatic peaks, finding its movement in the shifting relationship between the players and their machines.
