About this release
Ariwa Sounds: The Early Sessions documents Mad Professor’s first recordings, made between 1979 and 1981 in the front room of his South London home. Originally issued in 1984, the collection brings together singers, MCs and the Sane Inmates backing band around his developing four-track studio setup. Errol Sly, Ranking Ann, Sergeant Pepper and Deborah Glasgow appear alongside Victor Cross and Rock A Way with Sister Audrey, moving between lovers rock, reggae and dub. Sitting Room Dub closes the eight-track programme with the studio itself taking the lead. Melodies International’s vinyl reissue presents an early chapter in the Ariwa catalogue.
