About this release
Curated by Tom B., the second Léve Léve volume continues Bongo Joe's exploration of the popular music of São Tomé and Príncipe. Restored recordings from the 1970s and 1980s bring together Sangazuza, Conjunto Equador, África Negra, Pedro Lima and other performers, following the movement of puxa and socopê rhythms. Tight ensemble arrangements and extended grooves connect the dancefloor energy with songs about independence, spirituality, love and everyday life. Recorded across São Tomé, Luanda and Lisbon, the selection reflects the circulation of musicians and ideas through the Lusophone diaspora, placing familiar groups alongside less widely heard material.
