About this release
Chakalaka Jazz brings together eleven South African recordings selected by Fred Spider for Heavenly Sweetness. Spanning 1969–2003, the compilation connects musicians working at home and abroad, with an emphasis on the creative exchange of the 1970s. Marabi, goema and mbaqanga sit within a wider jazz language that absorbs new influences while keeping a distinct rhythmic character. The programme moves from Victor Ntoni and Clarence Wilson’s The Sacred Lion Dance to Johnny Dyani’s Magwaza, taking in The Drive, The Jazz Ministers and Zim Ngqawana along the way. This double LP presents the selection on 180g black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve.
