About this release
The Best Of Asona Records surveys the electric highlife catalogue of the label Anthony Roberts Frempong founded in Peckham in the mid-1980s. Its recordings trace the connections between Ghanaian highlife and the disco, funk and boogie sounds circulating through the diaspora. Thomas Frempong, Jewel Ackah, Sam Yeboah and Eric Agyemang feature alongside Kantata and Mr Cee, with fourteen tracks spread across two records. BBE’s collection moves from “Odo Pa” and “Kokroko Special” to “Make Me Know My Position” and “It’s High Time Now”, presenting the rhythmic and melodic range of the Asona catalogue in a gatefold double LP.
