About this release
Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffaloes' Uganda: Dawn Of African Rock takes the Japanese drummer's music into a darker, more experimental setting. Originally released on Toshiba in 1972, its four extended pieces combine progressive and psychedelic rock with African percussion, jazz and blues-funk guitar. Kimio Mizutani's guitar works alongside Hideaki Chihara on bass and Larry Sunaga on percussion, with composer Takeru Muraoka contributing to the ensemble. The arrangements develop gradually, letting rhythm, texture and improvisation move between styles rather than settling into a single form. This Mr Bongo MRBLP239 edition presents the album as a single vinyl LP housed in a replica box.
